Talking about chronic pain

If you’ve experienced chronic pain, you know it’s hard to describe.

The difficulty is in conveying with anything close to accuracy what it feels like to live with pain. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to write about my own persistent pain experience, and the results just never feel adequate.

But recently I had the opportunity to join in a conversation about pain and how mine has evolved and shifted over the years.

And it was actually kind of … fun!

Here’s what happened - I was invited to be a guest on From Pain to Possibility, a podcast hosted by Calgary-based kinesiologist / yoga therapist Susi Hately.

Susi works with private clients to help them reduce pain through movement-based therapy. She also runs a training program for yoga teachers like me who are interested in specializing in pain reduction.

Susi invited me on her show to talk about my experience with pain and to share my perspective as both her client (which I was this past year) and her trainee (I’ll finish up my training in March 2024).

It was a wide ranging conversation. We touched on some of my early memories of pain and the various modalities I’ve pursued to address it, my shifting understanding of pain and of myself, and how the pain has dissipated over the past year.

And like I said, it was a fun conversation. So I thought I’d share it with you.
